  4.     DIED. Jacques Soustelle, 78, World War II Free French
  5. patriot and leader in the underground movement against Algerian
  6. independence from France; in the Paris suburb of
  7. Neuilly-sur-Seine. During World War II, General Charles de
  8. Gaulle named Soustelle, a multilingual anthropologist, chief
  9. of the Free French intelligence service in the fight to
  10. liberate France from Nazi occupation. In the late 1950s, while
  11. serving as Governor-General in Algeria and Minister of
  12. Information under De Gaulle, Soustelle became a champion of
  13. French sovereignty over Algeria. He quit his government posts
  14. in 1959, allegedly to help direct a clandestine organization,
  15. the Secret Army, in two aborted coups against the De Gaulle
  16. government because of its move toward Algerian independence.
  17. Three years later, after being charged with "attempts against
  18. the state," Soustelle fled France. He spent six years in exile,
  19. mostly in Switzerland, before returning home following a
  20. general amnesty for those involved in the Algerian dispute.
